The Cars

Current Cars:

Minion- The name follows on from the teams theme of animated characters. This yellow and blue car was made predominantly out of flexible plywood to create a rigid but light air foil shape. The car is placed as far off the ground as possible to ensure the smoothest air flow possible. With a large wheel base, tank-style steering (used in all our cars) and specially made hubs, Minion handles impeccably. The batteries were placed at the front to balance out the weight of the car and driver, also aiding with the handling.

Minion made it's first appearance at the Northern Ireland heat in 2014, whilst it was still unfinished.

After several heats Minion underwent some modification to lift the body off the ground further.

Aluminion- Named after his brother Minion and combined with the word aluminium, if that wasn't obvious already. The car was previously imagined to be a twin of Minion, only made out of Aluminium. However, over some discussions, it was decided that the car would be based off former contender 'Coyote', being as low to the ground as allowed with a top-sided air foil. The car is designed to have a smaller cross-section than previous cars. Aluminion is being constructed using rivets, panel beating, bending aluminium sheet and reinforcement with Aluminium box section and angle. using aluminium should ensure that the car is fairly light and will have a smooth surface. The aluminium being used in the construction was kindly supplied by Building Product Design Ltd.

Coyote Mark I- A simple but reliable car that was built off the chassis of Thurso High School's 'Angels'.

Coyote Mark II- Another simple but reliable car made of Plywood and Aluminium angle. Coyote Mark II was also the car that sparked the invention of the sliding wheel covers, simple covers that moved with the steering to improve air flow. In 2012 Coyote won 3rd place in the National Final.

Coyote Mark III- After the success of Coyote Mark II we moved on to create another new coyote, one made out of fibreglass. The chassis for Coyote Mark III was mostly made from plywood with reinforced angle, It was a new material for the team to tackle and provided a brilliant learning curve. in 2013 Coyote Mark III came 3rd in the National Final much like it's predecessor.
